Baker in Spring
18 x 36 acrylic
Sumas 2
Original acrylic 20" x 30"
Here is the 3rd and latest in the BAKER SEASON group,  BAKER IN SPRING. It will be released as a limited giclee reproduction, probably towards the end of December Since switching into Acrylics 4 years ago, I have looked back at some of my earlier Watercolor works, and have wondered how I would have approached the subject in the acrylic medium. The Sumas Prairie area remains a fascination for me, with endless shapes, shadows and designs. The farmers in the area must think I have some pins loose, wandering around in their fields, camera in hand, while they labor away at legitimate work...."Look, Martha, it's that loony in the white station wagon...is he back here again?!" But there is spectacular beauty at hand in the Fraser Valley, especially if caught at the "magic hour", Robert Genn's phrase to describe how the late afternoon/early evening sun casts long shadows, blended with the warmest hues of all colours. The Sumas Prairie region also is the theatre for unique mixes of weather, such as in this image, where the sky almost seems to slide down into the valley below.

Live from Pender
Acrylic 11" x 14"
This is one of many  plein-aire images painted on Pender Island recently. I seem to find Mt. Baker everywhere I look, for example this scene from  South Pender Island, which was a one hour on-site sketch. This view is looking northwest from the west side of North Pender Island, across to the Gulf Islands, with Salt Spring Island featured prominantly. As with many of the plein-aire pieces, I don't really know what I have until some distance passes, then I take a closer look. These are one-hour works, and unlike studio pieces which are looked at over and over, sometimes for weeks, there is only a one hour  relationship with the painting...then it begins to become more familiar...then becomes one of your favorite pieces. This image is to be released in early summer 2006 as an upsized Giclee print.

Up The Valley The Fraser Valley region, including the sprawling Sumas Prairie, has so many possibilities for a painter, that if you stood on your head, you would still likely see a picture finished in your mind. The way the sky blurs into the land if the haze is right, and the multiple layers that unfold perfect for the artist trying to deal with the concept of values. This image and the painting, "Into the Distance", wrestle with the balance of foreground, middle and background. After painting in watercolour for so long, it was great to see this acrylic work in jury in the FCA Medal Show Oct 2001.

Once again, playing with values was the key to getting this one right. The setting is the Sumas Prairie, close to the vantage point for Up the Valley. This painting was part of the group of 10 works submitted in 2001 for consideration for Signature Status with FCA.
